How to check your home for damage

Inspecting your home’s roof following high wind conditions can be easily performed by simply looking at your home from the ground. It is not recommended that you attempt using a ladder or walking on a roof in windy conditions or when the roof shingles are wet. Simply walk around your home and inspect the roof for any signs of missing or loose roof shingles. Check that rain gutters are not loose or hanging off the house. Also, take the time to look around the nearby property for shingles, trim, and siding laying on the ground.

Another place to check your home is by inspecting the interior of your home for signs of water leaks. Carefully inspect each upper-level rooms’ ceiling and walls for water stains or signs of water leaks. Dark spots on walls and the ceiling are common signs of water leaks and damage. If access to an attic or crawl space is easy to check, carefully inspect your attic for signs of water damage and leaks. Use a flashlight and look for dark areas on wood and possible water stained areas.
